The Business of Giving Back

“Giving back” has been a priority for me from the first day of my catering business.  I love giving back to the Manchester community, as well as to other organizations and people in need.

I’m very lucky to work every day at my dream job with Brown Sugar Catering.  I get to indulge in my love affair with food and share it with community organizations and schools.

As a long-time cancer survivor, I’m happy to celebrate each and every moment.  I’m alive.  I’m a contributing member of society.  I’m able to laugh and enjoy the gift of life.  I’m truly blessed.  And I like to share that blessing with others.

My parents and grandparents instilled in me the importance of giving to and being a part of the community.  I’m committed to that belief.  I can still remember the day my father left to march with Dr. Martin Luther King in Selma, Alabama.  It was an important day for everyone.  I also remember when my mother ran for the Manchester Board of Education and how she spent Sundays volunteering at the Lutz Children’s Museum.

I strongly believe there is no division between my volunteer efforts and building a business that provides a service.  It’s all one to me.

My involvement in the community began in earnest with My Sisters’ Place.  I fell in love with the shelter the minute I saw it.  I prepared meals.  I stored food in my freezer whenever there was an overflow.  And I was thrilled to serve as Board President and President Emeritus.

It gives me tremendous joy to volunteer in my town of Manchester.  I’ve been involved with several organizations, including the Manchester Police Activities League, the local shelter, and MARC, Inc.

For me, it has never been about notoriety.  I’m just one of those people who can’t walk away when someone is in need.  A girlfriend swears she’s going to enroll me in the “University of Learning to Say NO.”

My response to her?  Good luck with that!
